Skill Practice - Free Standing HSPU

Alright guys and girls, it's time to start trying HSPUs away from the wall! Here's a progression that every one can do. See how far you can get!

  1. Tripod - Create a triangle with your head and hands on the floor, then place your knees on top of your elbows. If you're able to, pull your feet up off the ground and balance.
  2. Headstand - from a tripod position, extend your legs straight up and hold yourself upside down.
  3. Handstand hold - do some practice holding a HS away from the wall.
  4. Shoot to Pushup - From a headstand, pull your knees down towards a tripod, then quickly shoot your feet back up while trying to push and straighten your arms. Land in a pushup position. Gradually work on shooting your feet higher and higher, trying to go towards a HS.
  5. Shoot to HS - Same as above, but try to show control in the HS.
  6. Handstand Lower to Headstand - You must be able to show control in a handstand and headstand before attempting this step so you don't hurt your head or neck when landing in a headstand.
  7. Connect Free Standing HSPU - You can start in either a headstand or a handstand. Shoot your legs up to a handstand, then lower back in to a headstand then tripod position, before immediately shooting back up to handstand. How many can you connect???

Is all of that too easy for you?? Give this a try! Alec Anderson posted a video on Instagram combining HS walking and free standing HSPU. Setup 7 ab mats in a row about 5 feet apart. Begin by doing a 5' HS walk to the first ab mat and do 1 fsHSPU. Then walk to the second ab mat, and do 2 fsHSPU, then 3, 4, etc. Can you make it all the way to the 7th mat and do 7 fsHSPU without falling?
